Language models, transformers and their uses in biology

Abstract:

The past few years have seen a dramatic improvement in natural language processing through the invention of the transformer (a type of neural network) and large language models (LLM) trained on vast amounts of data. These LLMs can be finetuned, or even used without finetuning, on a target domain. I will discuss these models in general and give some examples of how we have used them in customer projects and also some applications in protein engineering and genomics.
