Which paper are we discussing?
A method for genome-wide genealogy estimation for thousands of samples Leo Speidel, Marie Forest, Sinan Shi, and Simon R. Myers (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41588-019-0484-x). See also comment by Kelley Harris in same issue (From a database of genomes to a forest of evolutionary trees, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41588-019-0492-x)
The paper discusses the Relate method which estimates whole-genome genealogies. In particular, this means estimating genealogies across all loci in a sample of genomes. This is a time-consuming effort, where previous methods (e.g. ARGweaver by Rasmussen et al) could only analyze a handful of loci. Relate achieves a considerable speedup by employing various heuristics, enabling the analysis of whole-genome data for thousands of individuals. The method provides greater power for inference of natural selection and to characterize recent demographic history.
